WORKSHOP SUBJECTS
At the beginning of workshops 2 to 9, I will give a short digital presentation of the materials & images relevant to that particular workshop. Also, I will bring a collection of inspiration books & printouts, a starting point for the nervous or uninspired!

1.
Bits and Bytes: a masterclass in the use of digital technology from the conception of a piece or body of work to the finished articles, demonstrating the hardware and software vital to my practice.

2. Material Illumination: “anything you can do on paper, you can do on fabric, but with the added beauty of texture”, is one of my sayings. In this workshop participants experiment with various decorative painting techniques on plain, mostly fine, fabrics; these include drawing, painting, stenciling, printing, bonding, marbling, & who knows what I will have discovered by the time I get to you!

3. Going Ornamental: an experimental workshop deriving imagery found in stately homes, Owen Jones, Meyer, Speltz etc. as inspiration to create surface patterns and textures using drawing, painting, marbling, bonding.

4.
Cuffs ‘n Ruffs: an experimental machine embroidery workshop, including the use of vanishing fabrics, velvets and fine silks, as well as some relevant painting techniques to achieve a contemporary approach to the textiles and lace of the 16th to 18th centuries.

5: Cuffs ‘n Ruffs in the Garden: an experimental workshop to achieve a contemporary approach to the printed, woven & embroidered textiles, & lace of the 16th to 19th centuries, informed by the floral imagery of the textiles, plants & garden design. Techniques include the use of vanishing fabrics, velvets & fine silks, combined with relevant painting techniques, & machine embroidery.

6. Remediation: participants explore the textures of textiles (embroidered, woven, printed, knitted and lace), representing them with drawing and painting.

7.
The Ornamental Machine: using ornament such as that found in stately homes, Owen Jones, Meyer, Speltz etc. as inspiration to create surface patterns and textures.

8.
Wondrous Machine in the Garden: a machine embroidery workshop informed by gardens, their design & statuary.

9.
Hats: make a simple-cut-and sew hat using machine embroidery and decorative painting; this is really a 2 day workshop.

10.
Waistcoats: design and sample towards a drawn, painted and machine embroidered waistcoat; this is really a 2 day workshop.
